Search Engine Optimisation - SEO

Also known as website optimization this is the technique of increasing the ranking of your website on Google or other search engines like Yahoo or Bing / MSN.

Getting traffic to your website is an essential part of having a small business website. Let's be frank it doesn't matter how beautiful your website is if nobody can find it. The people who will be looking for you by name will find you anyway.

The return on investment is outstanding because, unlike other forms of marketing, you normally don't have to keep paying again and again to stay on the top 10 of Google.

Imagine if you knew exactly what people were searching for on Google to find businesses just like yours? And then you targeted people so that you were their first contact. There's no limit on the volume of inquiries, and unlike a newspaper ad or sending out bulk flyers, you're there 24/7 365 days a year.

Why pay $1000's for advertising such as newspaper adverts - which aren't targeted - when you can target your "A" customer: the customer who pays on time everytime and never complains?

Take a look at the last 5 years ofYellow Pages, every year it's getting thinner and thinner. Why? Because more people are using Google to find businesses like yours and if you're not there, you're missing out and big time.

There are two parts of search engine optimisation you should be concerned with...

1. On page

2. Off page

On Page Search Engine Optimization

With your on page SEO you should include at a minimum...

Page Title: This is the title of each page and should contain the keywords you're targeting.

Meta Tags: These are the keywords that search engines take as being the most important on a given page.

Meta Description: You'll notice this when you do a search on Google. The meta description is the text that appears below the title.

Page Headlines: H1 & H2 is the headline text size on your web page and should include keywords.

Web Copy: This needs to not only have the appropriate keyword saturation, normally 1 to 3%, but also the web copy needs to make sense and drive people to contact you.

Internal Linking: Creating links within your website that are links of what people also search for.

Clean Code: This is the language that is used to develop your website (initial building of your website). It's important that the code is very good so search engines can easily read the website.

Images: Optimisation of images.

Off Page Search Engine Optimization

This is easy to explain but not so easy to do. Basically the more links from other websites that come into your website, and the higher the trust of those websites, the higher you'll rank.

BUT, the quality of these links are important in conjunction with the above on page SEO, all go toward increasing the ranking of your website on Google or other search engines like Yahoo and Bing.

When we are talking about quality, we're talking about websites that are already doing well on Google and have a strong trust factor. This is known as PR or Page Rank. The higher the PR websites that link into your website, the better off you'll be.
